It is a very exciting time for a family when they decide to adopt a new kitty. Of course kittens are cuddly and adorable. And they can also grow up to be great pets and wonderful companions. But whether or not they do grow up to be great adult cats depends a lot on how they are raised. Here we will look at a few simple ideas on how to care for a kitten so that you do wind up with a loving pet cat.
The best time to bring home a new kitty is around 8 weeks. At this time, they are usually fully weaned off their mother’s milk and have begun eating solid food. Bringing him home any earlier could present issues that require special care.
Though people tend to think cats should drink milk, the best drink for them is water. After they stop drinking milk from their own mother, that should be it. Cow milk can cause diarrhea or other stomach ailments. Fresh water should always be handy.
Just as you would not give your baby a T-bone steak, you won’t want to give your kitty adult cat food. You can feed her dry or wet cat food or some combination of both. You will just want to be sure that the food is formulated for kittens.
As mentioned earlier, it is a good idea not to adopt kittens at too young an age. One of the advantages of having kittens stay longer with their mother is that she helps teach her offspring to use a litter box. When you do provide your new kitten a litter box, do not use clumping litter. They could swallow the clumps while cleaning themselves.
And of course it is important to get a full check up from the vet. You need to be sure your new pet is de-wormed and tested for feline immunodeficiency, feline leukemia and other diseases.
