Port of Eden.
The Port of Eden is the most southern declared Port in NSW, and services the south coast
of NSW, including the towns of Bega, Merimbula, Bombala and Cooma.
The Port is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in NSW, and also has significant capacity
to service the needs of a variety of importers and exporters.

Export of woodchips is currently the major trade for the port with approximately 954,000 tonnes exported last year by South East Fibre Exports Pty Ltd. This is supplemented by exports of softwood logs and general cargo from the multipurpose wharf, which was commissioned in late 2003. The multi-purpose wharf has a length of 200 metres and approximately 6,000 square metres of paved storage area. It is capable of handling vessels of up to 32,000 dead weight tonnes and the depth alongside is 12.0 metres at datum. Ship's cargo gear is normally employed, although mobile cranes of up to 50 tonnes capacity are available with sufficient notice. The wharf is shared with the Department of Defence, and since its completion, has handled not only Warship visits, but Logging and Cruise Ships. To facilitate trade through the Multi Purpose Wharf, NSW Maritime has developed an 8 hectare cargo storage facility approximately 300 metres from the wharf. Author: eden real estate admin / Category: garden

We seem to be losing an essential skill in our society. Cooking. Real homemade cooking. The sort of cooking that Grandma used to cook for you. It’s important to teach cooking skills to kids, especially now when it seems so rare that kids are taught to cook. And the best place to start is homemade candy.

If you start teaching your kids to cook something they don’t like they probably won’t develop a love of cooking. But if you start the kids out cooking homemade cakes or homemade candy you can just about guarantee that the kids will love it, and want to do more.

Last night I was doing some cooking with my kids who are 11 and 8. They had a great time and of course they got to lick out the bowl too. Kids get so much enjoyment from cooking something that is simple to cook and great to eat. And homemade candy is always great to eat.

And once kids learn to cook they have a skill for life. And they graduate pretty fast from homemade candy onto other stuff.

Remember some basic rules. There is always mess and it always takes longer than you’d expect, at least at the start. Start the kids on a simple candy recipe. There are some wonderful simple homemade candy recipes that are simple for kids to cook. Start them on the easiest bit of the recipe.

And of course you’ve got to keep them away from heat, so avoid candy, for example, that requires a syrup. Syrup is heated to a high temperature so kids shouldn’t be stirring it, for example. No syrup burns.

And another reason to stay away from syrups is that they are a little tricky to get right, you have to heat them to just the right temperature. There are some fantastic simple homemade candy recipes, so start with something like pralines or truffles.

But once you’re all up to skill there’s no end to the homemade candy recipes you can try. Truffles, nougats, chocolate anythings, toffees, the list goes on and on. Oh and if you try toffee make sure you do chewy toffee, it’s absolutely the best toffee ever.

Now all that has made me hungry.

But seriously making homemade candy is a wonderful way to teach the kids to cook and teach them to love cooking too. They’re learning an essential life skill and enjoying it at the same time.

So grab some great homemade candy recipes, there’s lots on my website. And it’s cheaper and makes better candy than the store bought candy. Get the kids involved, they’ll thank you for it when they get older.
