The trend today is for really large, spacious rooms with high ceilings and wood flooring. These are wonderful living spaces if you enjoy bigger rooms. The problem is they tend to be rather cold and disconnected.

When you have a spacious area many people think it won’t feel cozy, but it’s not true. You’ll just need to choose a darker color to paint the walls since it will make it seem smaller. It also will bring a warmth feeling into the space that is open.

If the walls are a lighter color you’ll feel that the area is never ending. This is because light will reflect off of lighter colored walls rather than darker, richer colors. If you have those high ceilings and you feel that they are too far away from the rest of the room, try painting them a darker color rather than the traditional white.

Also when you are trying to make a larger room feel smaller, don’t place as much lighting in them. Also try purchasing larger furniture and plants which will make it seem cozier since you have the room. If you decide to create the large space into a few different groupings, add a few area rugs into the mix. You don’t need them to match but at least make them around the same theme. Place one in each grouping and you’ll notice the cozy feeling coming into play.

When you go to put small area rugs in a large room you need to make sure that they flow together, and now try to hold your attention in each separate location. With the right size and design you can make your room warm. For example if you have a room that is 12 by 24 feet, put in two rugs if you have two areas that are an 8 by 10 foot rug.

The area rugs that you choose can be very similar in their pattern, color and texture. The closer rugs are in these characteristics, the more cohesive the rugs will feel. Using area rugs that are exactly the same size and too close together will tend to split the room so one bigger than the other is a better choice.

If your area rugs are exactly the same or just too similar, you will lose the allure of your groupings. The ultimate choice would be a large area rug with a border design and the smaller with an overall all design that carries the same colors but in an inverse design. Once you have placed your rugs, you can sit back and enjoy your new cozy atmosphere.
