Simply spend time with your kids working on delightful Christmas ornament crafts and create memories and fun decorations at the same time! Here are a few easy projects to make with your youngsters.
Candy Cane Reindeer: One of the most fun and fast traditional Christmas ornament crafts for the season is this cute little googly eye reindeer. You’ll need some candy canes, brown pipe cleaners, small googly eyes, small red pompoms, thin ribbon, and a small jingle bell.
Start with the pipe cleaner. Twist it tight around the “neck”, under the hook of the candy cane, and it will form a V. Then shape the ends to look like antlers. Glue the eyes on each side of the “head.” Glue the red pompom on to be the nose. Tie the ribbon on for a hanger and string the bell through the ribbon. You’ll probably want several for your tree and your wreath.
Pasta Wreath: This is a traditional Christmas wreath with a twist. You’ll need small sturdy paper plates, a variety of pasta shapes, craft glue, tempura paint or craft spray paint, and pretty thick ribbon for a bow.
Create the wreath form by cutting out the middle of the paper plate. Start gluing the pasta onto the wreath form trying to cover as much of the plate as possible. Take whatever paint you have chosen and carefully paint the pasta and let it dry. Then, tie a pretty bow and glue it to your wreath and hang any other ornaments you might like on your completed wreath. Make a few more so everyone in the family gets to display their own creation!
Cinnamon Cookie Ornaments: These ornaments are very old fashioned and smell wonderful. Gather your supplies first. You’ll need a big mixing bowl, cookie sheet, cookie cutters in shapes that you like, a straw or toothpick for poking a hole in the ornament for hanging, and some pretty thin ribbon. The ingredients are: 1 cup of ground cinnamon, 4 tablespoons of white glue, and 3/4 to 1 cup of water.
Mix all your ingredients in a big bowl, pouring only some of the water in, then mixing and adding more water if you need in order to get the dough like sugar cookie dough. Put it in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Sprinkle a little cinnamon on a cutting board and knead the dough with your hands until it’s nice and smooth. Then use a pastry roller and roll the dough out evenly until about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out your shapes and poke a hole in the top for a hanger. Put your shapes on a cookie sheet and set in a warm oven for about 2 hours. Remove, cool, and tie pretty ribbons through the holes. Now you can give them as gifts or hang them from your own tree.
You’ll find there are many simple Christmas ornament crafts for kids to make for every age group. When you’re looking at your little ones waiting with great expectation for the big day to come, give them a fun project to keep their hands and minds busy, and keep a smile on their face!
